About The GRIT & IRON Network

Every scar tells a story regardless of whether or not they’re seen. At The GRIT & IRON Network, we believe healing begins when hands and hearts are given the chance to rebuild—one project at a time.
Veterans, regardless of whether or not they’re battling PTSD, often feel disconnected. The GRIT & IRON Network provides a place to escape those feelings. Through woodworking and creative restoration, they can find purpose, peace, and pride again while being around fellow veterans.
Our mission isn’t just to make beautiful things—it’s to help people feel whole again.

Why We Exist

Far too many veterans return from service carrying unseen wounds. PTSD, isolation, and a loss of direction and or purpose can make everyday life feel like a battlefield. The GRIT & IRON Network was created to offer something different—a space where creativity becomes therapy, and craftsmanship becomes community.

Where It Started

The idea began in a garage workshop, with a stack of broken fence boards and a vision. As a veteran himself, our founder knew the power of building something meaningful with your own hands. What started with one reclaimed American flag has grown into a movement of restoration—of wood, of skill, and of spirit.

How We Help

We use salvaged materials to help salvage lives. Our programs are designed to teach veterans woodworking, vehicle restoration, blacksmithing, art, and MORE— within a space where they can reconnect, learn, and reignite their sense of purpose all while being around other veterans. We launched with The Broken Board Studio and The Veteran Support Corps. The Broken Board Studio focuses primarily on crafting reclaimed wood products while building toward a full creative center for hands-on healing while The Veteran Support Corps focuses on acts of service for veterans in need.

What’s Next

Every dollar raised, whether from donation or sale through our Re-Store, funds the next stage of growth—from more tools and materials to outreach, and eventually physical spaces dedicated to veteran workshops. This is more than a nonprofit—it’s a second mission.

Our Mission

To help U.S. military veterans cope with PTSD and rediscover purpose through hands-on creative work—starting with woodworking and expanding into restoration, metalwork, and art.

We believe in the healing power of craftsmanship. By transforming salvaged materials into meaningful products, we empower veterans to reconnect with themselves, their communities, and their sense of purpose.

Our Vision

We envision a future where every veteran has access to tools, training, and a tribe.

A future where broken doesn’t mean discarded—it means rebuildable.

A future where workshops become wellness centers, and creation becomes connection.

The GRIT & IRON Network will grow into a network of creative spaces and supportive programs, all designed to give veterans a second mission: rebuilding their lives while building something real.

Our Founder

My name is Stephen McCauley. I'm a United States Marine Corps veteran, a craftsman, and the founder of The GRIT & IRON Network.

Like a lot of veterans, coming home wasn't as simple as walking through the door. The transition out of service can leave you feeling unmoored — like the person you were trained to be no longer has a mission. For me, the workshop became my sanctuary. Cutting, building, creating — it gave me back something I didn't know I'd lost: purpose.

The GRIT & IRON Network didn't start as a business plan or a grant application. It started as a poem — written in a moment of honest reflection about what it means to be broken, scarred, and still standing. Still valuable. Still capable of something beautiful.

A Broken Board should ne'er be rendered useless,But prized and cherished for its endless uses.

That's what this organization is built on. Not pity. Not charity. But the belief that every veteran who has carried the weight of service deserves a place to set it down — pick up a tool — and build something that matters.

If that resonates with you, you're in the right place.
